Dark sky star party at Chuchupate, weather permitting.  Event is free and open to the public.  

Dark Sky Star Party with the AVAC, as well as other astronomy clubs from all of Southern California.  Weather permitting; please check the weather before leaving for the event.  

Elevation is over 5400 feet.  There are vault toilets (bring toilet paper), and no running water.  Bring your own drinks, snacks, meals. Cell phone service is spotty.

Directions:  From the Antelope Valley,  Take CA-138 (Ave D) west to Interstate 5.  Take I-5 North to the Frazier Mountain Road exit. Go west, passing Frazier Park, until you come to a 4 way stop with a flashing red light. Continue straight ahead for several more miles until you come to Lockwood Valley Road.  Turn LEFT. (There's a pizza place on the corner)  Continue for about 3 miles until you see a small sign "Chuchupate Ranger Station", turn LEFT (Frazier Mountain Rd/Forest Rte BN04) . The speed limit on this road is 20 mph. Drive through the Ranger Camp, for about 1/8 mile until you see a sign "Trail Head" and make a right turn into the parking lot.  There are no fees or passes required to use the parking area.  See attached map.   If you arrive at the Chuchupate Campgrounds, you have gone too far!

If coming for only part of a night to observe, and you plan on leaving during the night, please park your car on the perimeter with your headlights facing the road out.  When you leave use your parking lights, and after exiting the parking lot, turn on your headlights.  Do not point your lights into the parking lot where people are observing and/or doing photography.
