If Pluto Could Talk by Andrew Arellano

Hi Earthlings, I would like to introduce myself to you. My name is Pluto and I'm a planet. OOPS, I'm sorry, I guess I was a planet like you but that title was recently taken away from me. I have had many names since I was first noticed. I was first called Planet X back in 1894 or the ninth planet in the solar system. I was discovered by a man named Clyde W. Tombaugh on February 18, 1930. An 11 year old girl named Venetia Burney came up with my name and it was given to me on March 24, 1930. I was named for the Roman god of the underworld and my name really means to "demote or devalue something." Alas, this may be why they demoted me from being a planet to a dwarf planet on September 13, 2006. This makes me very sad because I would still like to be a planet like your planet.

I was first thought to be an escaped moon of Neptune that was knocked out of its orbit by its current moon called Triton. This couldn't be true because I never come anywhere near this planet. Even though it may seem to you that my orbit crosses Neptune's, I can tell you for sure that our orbits will never intercept!

Let me tell you a little about me. I'm a tiny planet. Your Moon is bigger than me. My diameter stretches about 1,485 miles. My planet is made up of between 65 to 75% of rock mixed with ices. My surface is very icy and is composed of 98% nitrogen. There is also a little bit of methane and carbon monoxide too.   My atmosphere is very thin and it freezes but falls to the surface when I move away from the Sun. As I get closer to the Sun, my temperature increases and the ices sublimate into gas. This creates an anti-greenhouse effect. You probably should borrow this idea from me. It would come in handy to help save your Earth from the problems your "Greenhouse Effect" is causing you right now. The temperature here is about -390 degrees Farenheight. Yes, it is quite chilly over here. "Brrrr" and it is pretty dark too. Did you know that I'm about 5,913,520,000 kilometers from the Sun? I'm farther from the Sun than any of the other eight planets. I do not think that you Earthlings could live here without special spaceships, spacesuits or equipment.

Did you know that I have three moons? This is two more than you have. Charon was discovered first in 1978 and my two little moons, Nix, and Hydra, were discovered in 2005. They rotate pretty close to me compared to your Moon. Charon is a big moon and almost as big as me. My rotational period is 6,387 days and it is the same for my moon, Charon too. We have a synchronous orbit, so we always face each other as we travel though space. Can you believe that they think that Charon it is my dwarf double planet? "Ouch that hurts!"

Well, I just wanted you to know a little bit about me. I see your space explorations from Earth even from way out here. Maybe someday you will visit me. I hope that with some of this information, you will come well prepared. I welcome you with open arms and space. Oh, and before I sign off, please reconsider and make me a planet like you once again. I hate being called a dwarf! Thanks from little old me.. .Pluto.
