Adamantium
by Josua Sanchez
I stepped off the Mars Lander and held my breath. Staring out across a rocky plain red, and barren of any trace of life, I realized I was the first human on Mars! My mike went live and I heard the chief in my head set. "Josh, we've got the president on the line, he'd like to speak with you". Through a lot of static I replied, "I'd love to" The next voice on was the President of the United States!
"Hello, Son, how are you doing" I laughed and replied
"Well I'm a hundred seventy million miles away right now" The president chuckled from that great distance and I with him. He asked if there was anything 1 wanted to say. I thought for a moment then replied "Armstrong's words still count in 2037 as they did in 1967." After this brief interval, my four man crew stepped out and we began.
I'm a metallurgist so it is my job to find new metals. There was one Geologist and the others were Microbiologists. Surrounded by rusty red iron rocks, I obviously was the least important of the crew. We started off. I headed out into the flat rocky plain while the others went to explore some caves close by. I picked up a case to collect rocks and started heading into the plain arbitrarily, picking up a suspicious looking rock before throwing it back to the ground. Soon I became frustrated and uncomfortable walking in gravity that had me weighing forty pounds.
Walking was becoming tiring although the suit helped alot We used a weight belt like divers do, except ours weighed almost three hundred pounds on earth. Soon I grew tired of finding nothing and decided to circle back, and was I ever glad I did. When I was in sight of the Lander, I quickened my pace, and that's when it happened! I tripped and nearly did a somersault in the air flying at least five feet before I landed. I sighed and doubled back to see what I had tripped on, and there at my feet was a smooth looking blue boulder.
Larger than my head, it had silvery veins running through it that seemed like metal! With a grin I picked up the ore, and dropped it in my case. Once I'd returned to the Lander, my mission was done. It was time to leave. The biologists had found nothing to signify life and the geologist confirmed what we already knew. After a long trip home and a parade, we found out that the metal I'd retrieved was harder than any known earth substance. Being a great lover of comic books I laughed and decided to call it Adamantium!
