“Youth Exploring Astronomy”

Essay Contest

Open to all Antelope Valley 5th through 12 th grade students

 

All students who are enthusiastic about astronomy and space are invited to write up to a 500 word, typewritten essay using one of these theme choices:

5th and 6th grade students:

“Growing Up On A Space Station”
“Looking Through A Telescope, I See...”

 

7th and 8th grade students:

“Through The Eyes Of A Mars Rover”
“Asteroids, Meteors and Comets, What A Ride!”

 

9th through 12 th grade students:

“If I Were The Pilot Of SpaceShipTen”
“If I Had The Chance To Explore Mars!”

Entries may be submitted from November 15, 2007 until March 15, 2008.

 

The winners will be chosen based upon their high level of enthusiasm and thoughtful creativity demonstrated in the essay. A panel of parents, amateur astronomers, local dignitaries and Air and Space professionals will perform the essay judging.

 

Eight winners, two from each grade level, will be publicly recognized at an Astronomy Club meeting at the Sage Planetarium in Palmdale, with a planetarium show to follow.

 

As a Winner You Will Be Awarded:
  • A variety of prizes from local businesses.
  • A tour of JPL in Pasadena.
  • Time with scientists to discuss their projects and career experiences.
  • An opportunity to visit a planetarium show.

 

To enter the contest, please fill out and follow directions on the entry form and return the form and essay.
There are three different entry forms, one for 5th and 6th grade (Word or PDF), one for 7th and 8th grade (Word or PDF) and one for 9th through 12th grade (Word or PDF)
