The Future and Humans
Wow! You have created a time machine that has just beamed you to a strange place. Your contraption tells you the year is 5010. The air is filled with silence. You are surrounded by trash. There is no life. You are standing on the last patch of earth left. This area you are standing on is not covered with water like the rest of this bleak place is. "Where am I", you think to yourself. The answer is planet earth! How did this beautiful planet, once filled with life, plants, and color, ever come to such a state of darkness? Years of normal human activities created this mess. We have been slowly heating the earth with the emission of greenhouse gases. As you explore this new earth, you wonder why almost the entire surface is covered with water. The reason for this is as global warming got worse and worse; ice on the caps began melting thus flooding the earth with melted ice. Wait, where have all the humans gone?!
Scared, lonely, and hungry you wait for a sign of life. It's been a while since you arrived. Because the atmosphere has withered away the sky is very dark. Even though you have no clue what time it is you are very tired. For the first time you stare into the dark, black sky. Suddenly you turn your attention to a bright, orange ball of light similar to what earth once looked like. Quickly you decide to go to the year 3000. Happily you step out seeing hundreds of cargo ships taking off and arriving. You ask a passerby what is going on and are told that everyone is setting off for Mars and the manmade biosphere.
Your curiosity gets the best of you, and you start asking questions about the Mars biosphere. "Where have you been?" asks the stranger. "Everyone knows about the biospherewide modules which contain everything from air, electricity, and a water supply. Life support systems include sleeping and living quarters, restrooms, and showers as well as food preparation areas. Agricultural areas have been established along with environmental elements such as savanna, rain forest, and ocean areas."
"That's amazing!" you mumble to yourself. "Why live on Mars? Why not an . asteroid or the moon?
"Unlike Mars, an asteroid or the moon has no chance of supporting life. Mars is somewhat like living in the desert, only hotter. Because Mars even resembles the desert scientists figured it wouldn't be hard to adapt to. Water has even been discovered! In a way we created a global warming on Mars so that the water that was found to be ice would melt. I personally don't think the moon is a good idea either because I don't want dangerous moon sand sticking to my body!" explained the stranger.
It is now time to return to your own time enlightened and appreciating your planet. All there is left to do is wait, eagerly, for the future, in astronomy!
